What is IPIRP?

IPIRP stands for the Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program. This program, instituted by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, allows New York residents to complete a defensive driving class online rather than sitting in a classroom. All residents who complete an approved online defensive driving course will reduce their driver violation point total by up to 4 points, and save themselves up to 10% on their auto insurance premiums!

The Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program (I-PIRP) was announced on May 18, 2009 by the NYSDMV Commissioner. Taking its lead from successful online colleges and universities, it uses a convenient and interactive internet platform. In this way, it is accessible and useful for many students who might not otherwise have the time to attend a course. This does not, however, mean that the course syllabus is in anyway reduced. The New York I-PIRP online defensive driving course will cover all of the material that the classroom based training covers, to include:

• collision prevention
• defensive driving techniques
• alcohol and drug use as contributing factors in traffic accidents
• driver attitude that triggers behavior such as speeding, reckless, and aggressive driving
• improper lane use
• vehicle and traffic law
